The selectors told Soetkin Collier that she could not sing for Belgium with her folk band Urban Trad at the contest in Riga in May because her political views would bring the country into disrepute. The decision was taken after the security services wrote a letter to the prime minister saying Collier, 25, had been under surveillance for “far-Right” activities. It alleged that she had attended a Nazi rally in 1996 commemorating Rudolf Hess.

On Monday the mother of one of the contestants who was knocked out of YAS was allowed to come on Liveline to air her sour grapes. This woman’s daughter has now been voted out by the public twice but the mother still seems to have difficulty accepting it. She says the twins will disgrace us at the Eurovision and she thinks her daughter was better. My mother thinks I’m always right too. Luckily she has too much decorum to go on Liveline about it. In an attempt to breathe life into The Eurovision, RTE told us we could vote for who we wanted to represent us… My mother thinks I’m always right too. Luckily she has too much decorum to go on Liveline about it. In an attempt to breathe life into The Eurovision, RTE told us we could vote for who we wanted to represent us. But we’re not voting for the right people. The judges have essentially told us that they have a lot of experience in these matters and we should listen to them. Well, call me crazy but I trust the public before I trust an old man wearing a linen suit with the sleeves rolled up. Po-faced old Phil Coulter certainly didn’t look like someone with his finger on the pulse last Sunday.

It can be expected that the national final of Serbia and Montenegro the coming year will be entitled Beovizija 2004 as the broadcaster doesn’t hide the multitude of connections this festival will have with the Eurovision past, present and future. The strongest sign is the way the jury has been put together. It is said that every single one of the nine jury members are former participants in the Eurovision Song Contest. Maybe the most well-known jury members being Baby Doll, who call herself Babi Dol in her home country, and Extra Nena. They represented the entire, former republic of Yugoslavia the two last years of the country’s existence and performed respectively Brazil and Ljubim te pesmama. Lola Novakovic, who was the second artist to represent the Balkan nation, and who earned the second best result in the Eurovision history of Yugoslavia with the fourth position for Ne pali svetla u sumrak in 1962, has also been engaged as a jury member. The deadline to submit songs has been set to February 25.
