Dana: ‘Victory was a sad moment for me’esctoday.com
This show usually deals with current burning issues. But today, especially for the season’s last show, Dana International was invited to an interview with one of Israel’s most prominent journalists. ‘The thing I remember most from the moment of victory in the Eurovision Song Contest is just being depressed’, said Dana. ‘We won the contest after months of hard labor, and years of being in the fringes of the music industry… This show usually deals with current burning issues. But today, especially for the season’s last show, Dana International was invited to an interview with one of Israel’s most prominent journalists. ‘The thing I remember most from the moment of victory in the Eurovision Song Contest is just being depressed’, said Dana. ‘We won the contest after months of hard labor, and years of being in the fringes of the music industry. Where were all the fun and excitement of the victory? All I wanted was to be with the crowds celebrating in Tel-Aviv’s city square and feel the happiness of victory’, said Dana, who looked a lot more mature and realistic. ‘All I remember that after the contest the only things I saw were just hotel rooms’, she added. Dana International sometimes takes the role of a cultural envoy by Israel’s foreign ministry and thats a far cry than what she was used to, before she burst into the spotlights in Israel.

If your notions of Iceland are limited to Bj?rk videos or the Eurovision Song Contest, you may want to experience the offbeat vision of Baltasar Korm&#225kur–a filmmaker whose dislike of political correctness is matched only by his fear of repetition. His last (and first) film, the acclaimed 101 Reyjkavik (2000), was a relaxed urban comedy; now he’s back with The Sea, a vicious family drama set in a remote Icelandic fishing village. The central character is Th&#243rdur (Gunnar Eyj&#243lfsson), the grizzled and ailing patriarch of a family more warped than the finances of the fishing business they all depend on. Fiercely autocratic, Th&#243rdur has spent his life ruthlessly bullying his children and his meek second wife, Kristin (Kristbj?rg Kjeld), the sister of his first wife who died 10 years earlier. Now dying himself, and fearful of losing his business to a large fishing conglomerate, Th&#243rdur has summoned his offspring for one last round of abuse, thoughtfully disguised as the reading of his “memoirs.

But the whole concoction is so headily enjoyable, so ludicrously exhilarating that it’s impossible not to be charmed. Disposable in the best possible way, ‘Fire’ is a perfect antidote to the black-clad sulky rock hordes that are crowding the record shops this summer. And the last track could even be a Eurovision entry. Electric Six rock! Luke McManusTracklisting: Dance Commander – Electric Demons In Love – Naked Pictures Of Your Mother – Danger! The all-girl trio whipped off their conservative tops mid-song at the Party in the Park show to reveal cleavage-bearing skimpy gear underneath. The group were among the top pop acts at the annual event in London’s Hyde Park in front of 100,000 fans – the UK’s biggest one-day pop event. The girls – dressed in black and white – echoed Eurovision winners Bucks Fizz’s famous performance in 1981 when Cheryl Baker and Jay Aston had their skirts pulled off. Kitten star Jenny Frost wore just a boob-tube held in place with tape, while her band-mates Liz McLarnon and Natasha Hamilton wore black bra tops. Destiny’s Child star Beyonce Knowles provided another spectacular performance as she shook her booty while she ran through her new number one hit Crazy in Love. The singer wore a crimson hotpants jumpsuit and tottered on blue stilettos as she sang the track surrounded by sexy dancers. Bootylicious chart star Beyonce Knowles has told how she wandered around Top Shop – and went unrecognised for 20 minutes.

But few would have suspected that thousands of pounds of Sir Peter’s fortune would be set aside after his death to the men who made deliveries to his home in The Bishops Avenue, East Finchley. His former milkman, Eric Beechey, of Coningsby Drive, Potters Bar, was left ?1,000 by the fun-loving theatre producer in his will, while postman James Burge, of Great North Road, East Finchley, was left ?3,000 and ‘the wish that he had made friends with my friendly dog Cassie’. advertisement
Sir Peter, who died aged 92 in February, was best known for his production of The Mousetrap, which has been running for more than 50 years, and was married to Katie Boyle, herself famous for presenting the Eurovision Song Contest. Mr Beechey, who stopped delivering Sir Peter’s pints in 1992, and now works at Kenwood House in Hampstead, said he was very surprised by the gift. “It’s a lovely thought,” he said. “I was quite overwhelmed by it really. I knew Sir Peter Saunders for many years.

That was to change as I grew into adulthood and the seminal share experience of my life was Aran Energy. It’s hard to credit now, but back in the mid-Eighties holding Aran was as sexy as texting the Search for a Star Eurovision competition – everybody was doing it. I even managed to persuade my mother to buy into what my accountant dismissingly referred to as “a hole in the ground”. But then accountants are not a profession prone to wild flights of fancy – and certainly not given to taking a punt on an oil exploration share. While the rest of us were kidding ourselves that share investment was a doddle and dreaming of employing an entire firm of accountants to manage the inevitable windfall that would come our way, more sensible citizens were putting their money in less adventurous places. It all had to end in tears of course and for greedy people like me, staying long after it was wise to do so resulted in a lot of pain.
