I told her I didn’t mind my clothes being splashed and just give me a shout if you need me”). Of course, her TV career is a big part – and wannabes will want to know exactly how she did it. Viewers first noticed her when she presented Eurovision in 1995. An apparent overnight success, she’d actually been part of the RTE furniture for many years. After school, she did an arts degree and started teaching. Around the same time she began to do part-time continuity announcing, often at night and often filling in for the likes of Thelma Mansfield. She loved it, and kept it up alongside her teaching… She loved it, and kept it up alongside her teaching. WHEN she took a five-year break from teaching to spend more time with her children Aoife (now 19), Tom (17) Eoin (14) and Lucy (12), a job in the newsroom came up and she took it. Eurovision happened in the fifth year, so instead of returning to teaching, she decided to give TV a whirl. It’s been going so well, with Open House in its sixth season and regular outings on such shows as Up For The Match and The People of the Year, that it doesn’t look like she’ll be going back to school any time soon. “I would have no difficulty going back. I did love teaching too, I’m still in touch with all my teacher friends and I sometimes joke that when all the children are grown up I might become a teacher in Africa. ” Self Help, a charity that funds water and agricultural projects in Africa, is very close to Mary’s heart.

Along with Bjorn, Benny and Anna-Frid of Abba, the singer scored nine chart-toppers in the UK between 1974 and 1982. She was paralysed
with terror. SUTCLIFFE:
Germaine, what about, they’ve
added extra music for this,
it’s not terribly easy to
distinguish it from the rest
of the music, what about that?

GREER:
I can’t remember a single
note. Well, it was a bit like
the Eurovision song contest,
they sang out of tune. It was
driving me crazy. ROSEN:
I saw you tapping your finger
to Forget About the Boy. I
did! Though you cussed under
your breath and said: “They’re
not boys!!”, because you’re an
expert. GREER:
No I did not say that! You
fibber.

“Members bring their suggestions for investments to the meetings and then explain why they are worth buying. “If there are too many suggestions, then any member who has come with more than one will be asked to pick out the one they like the most. “We usually end up with around seven or eight suggestions to discuss and then, rather like the Eurovision Song Contest, everyone votes on the suggestions and the most popular are chosen. “One of the club’s first investments proved a real winner. The club invested £2,000 in Info Bank, the net-based information service, back in 1999 and sold their holding soon afterwards for £3,500. Another early success was Baltimore, the specialist internet security software company. Unfortunately, unlike Info Bank, members decided to hang onto their shares only to see the them plummet.

Dancehall Qs and Hucklebuck Shoes – in comfortIrish Independent
What will bring a tear to the eye of many is that not only will all the old favourites be performed, but there will be incredulity at who is performing. Richard Rock will portray his famous father Dickie, while Eileen Reid will give way to her daughter Claudine Reid – beehive and all. Even Sean Dunphy who sang in the Eurovision Song Contest will be represented by his son Brian in the show. The best part is that it’s in the state of the art Helix Theatre pre-Christmas and then tours nationwide in lovely warm cosy venues. Punters can now relax in some luxury instead of being crowded in a dance hall. All that squashing may have been fine in your twenties, but at our age – well, you do like your bit of comfort. Dancehall Qs & Hucklebuck Shoes opens in the Helix Theatre in Dublin on December 8 (01 700 7000) for which tickets are now sold out.

IT WILL last forever in the hearts of true Celtic and Rangers fans. Strange to see them playing in the Champions League , sullying the otherwise superb coverage of massive, massive games on Sky Sports 1 and 2, Sky Sports Xtra, ITV, TV3, and RTE. There is something of major cultural importance going on with this, a sort of fortnightly Eurovision with a difference: the competitors are very good at what they do, and have better songs too. In fact this may the first unqualified triumph of the entire European Project since the Treaty of Rome. Even Rangers emerged from the primeval slime in which they wallow, to suggest a massive, massive headline to me. Based on the fact that Phil Neville scored against Rangers whose supporters are called the Billy Boys, it also contains a subtle reference to the new Tarantino film. The headline is ‘Phil Kills Bills’.
