Video replays of the solitaryFrench score were so inconclusive that the Kiwi referee had nobusiness awarding the try. England’s players overhauled that injustice withplenty of Dead-Eye Jonny’s points to spare even though that giftborrowed from the Eurovision Song Contest kept the Middle Englandmajority in the 82000 crowd on tenterhooks for longer thannecessary. Not until Jonny had put France beyond logical hope ofrecovery with only a quarter of an hour remaining did thecharioteers swing low and into full voice. Quite where tens of thousands of them will do their singing fivenights hence is uncertain. Already priced higher than some monthly wage packets all thetickets were snapped up long ago. Some though will slip through French and New Zealand fingerson to the black market – at even more inflated prices.

After this weekend those days could be over. Firstly on Saturday young Cumbrian Tom Morley sang his heart out for the United Kingdom in the very first Junior Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen. After the humiliation the nation suffered in May when Jemini left Latvia with ‘nil points’ blaming a post-Iraq backlash it was great to see 10-year-old Tom pull in the points – 118 in all – to finish a very creditable third out of 16. Then yesterday Newcastle Falcons’ Jonny Wilkinson put the boot into the French and sent England into the Rugby World Cup final against Australia next Saturday. The Aussies are going to be tough to beat on home territory so here’s hoping Jonny puts in plenty of practice to kick us to victory. Whatever the result we’re sure he’ll get a hero’s welcome when he returns home to the region.

Michael Flatley an Irish dancer was commissioned to create a dance performance as a short interval piece for the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin. The reaction to his electrifying seven-minute production was immediate. Soon Riverdance was touring all over Europe and the U. to sold-out audiences.
