? This new game is typified by one Kerry man in possession of the ball surrounded by twenty Tyrone of Armagh men, rugby tackles, lots of running, very little kicking and loads of hand passing. In the end Armagh?s bid to retain Sam Maguire was halted by near neighbours Tyrone, who lifted the trophy for the very first time. Inspired on the field by Peter Canavan and off it by Mickey Harte (the football coach not the Eurovision contestant). But the real football story, from this neck of the woods at least, was Waterford?s Munster U-21 triumph. After defeating Clare, Cork ducked and dived for a couple of months but finally got their comeuppance in Walsh Park as the home side qualified for a Munster Final meeting with Kerry. The Kingdom too traveled to Walsh Park as favourites and as Cork did left defeated as the Deise claimed a memorable and never to be forgotten Munster Final triumph over the Kingdom. The Dubs may have put an end to the All Ireland dream but it was still a wonderful year for the Waterford U-21?s.
