If your song fits into the ballad or pop category it won’t be considered. ” When he enquired about the BBC direct entry scheme, Eager was told that it has not yet been decided what this process will be and was advised to look out for adverts in the trade press. Commented Eager: “Eurovision provides an opportunity to show off the best of UK popular music. We have failed to make an impact over recent years. Surely that calls for a different approach by the BBC. The apparent acceptance by the Corporation that the Song Search competition run by BASC provides a good basis for a source of songs for Eurovision is restrictive and elitist. I believe the BBC should actively encourage professional song writers and performers to enter.

Undeterred, he’s written Taking Charlie, a monologue for a 30-year-old woman that also features a number of songs written by its performer, Abi Roberts. She plays the eponymous Charlie, a mixed-up woman in a hideous bright pink tracksuit who finds herself in rehab after overdoing the drink and the cocaine, and embarking on a doomed affair with a gay vet who has left her pregnant. The songs, ranging from Eurovision parody to touching ballads, are witty and tuneful, and Harvey’s account of a woman’s life careening out of control is both amusing and touching. Nevertheless, I experienced a feeling of déjà vu during this show, and realised that it was because Taking Charlie owes such a heavy debt to both Alan Bennett’s matchless Talking Heads and the Andrew Lloyd Webber song-cycle.

The final soiree kicked off at about 1830CET and entertainment is being provided to the crowd that rapidly converged at the Trade Fair Grounds by local singers and artists who have represented Malta in a number of international festivals including the Eurovision Festival in past years. Besides established local artists, the closing ceremony is also featuring the Fgura Scouts Band, two choirs the Natasha & Charlene Children’s choir and the Marsascala Ulied Sant’Anna choir besides the Qormi San Gorg Band Club and the Versatile Brass Ensemble. At the end of the soiree, as is done every year the total sum collected this year was publicly announced by Kerygma Director Fr Charles Fenech. It is clear that this year’s edition of the Kerygma Solidarjeta’ bl-Isports campaign has failed to reach and much less surpass the record amount collected last year when the sum collected totaled Lm235, 000. Dana to go head to head with Mary for Park postIrish Independent
FG’s decision not to run for the presidency remains unchanged despite their electoral success in the local and European elections. That means it will be much more difficult for Dana to get the nominations of councillors. However, the 1970 Eurovision song contest winner who received 179,000 votes in the last race for the park, believes there is a desire among many local representatives for a presidential election rather than for Mrs McAleese to be re-elected unopposed. And she says the result of the Nice One referendum suggests there’s a hard core of voters sceptical about the new EU constitution. “The insult of being asked to vote for a second time on Nice has not been lost on the Irish people. ” She said she hoped there were enough people in local authorities and in the Oireachtas concerned enough about the sovereignty of Ireland to come forward and offer their support. “County councillors have a profound understanding of decisions being made centrally that really impose upon local public representatives, leaving them to carry the can.
