Local tourist attractions are backing his bid and have rallied round with donations of gifts for him to give to his fellow competitors. Tom, 11, from Cleator Moor, will be up against 22 singers from around the world, including Australia, the USA, Canada, Sweden, Belarus and Saudi Arabia – and he wanted to give them a taste of the Lake District. He was inundated with presents, including traditional West Cumbrian souvenirs, after his mum Tina, asked the Beacon for help. “In the spirit of international friendship he has gifts for all his fellow competitors thanks to the generosity of the Beacon, Sellafield, Muncaster Castle, Kangol and the Lake District Coast Aquarium at Maryport,” she said… Tom will be singing his self-penned peace anthem, My Song for the World – which he came third with in Copenhagen and which he recently performed at a Whitehaven wedding in memory of the victims of September 11. He will be joined in Romania by his parents Jacky and Tina, and his sister Demi. Meanwhile, Cumbria’s second Junior Eurovision hopeful Cory Spedding is gearing up for her international debut when she competes in the singing contest in Lillehammer in Norway on November 20. The Frizington 13-year-old was chosen to represent her country in JECS after winning the British final with her song, The Best is Yet to Come. Other stories from this category that may

Then five years ago another drummer came in, and this is the new Izabo. There are four of us now.

You don’t have a choice. Rent is out of your league. The point when you know things have gone down the tubes: While we used to top the league for Eurovision wins, the only achievement these days is topping the rip-off table. If you feel proud that we’re beating the rest of Europe at something, you know you’ve lived here too long. The ‘when you know you’re really screwed’ indicator: The percentage increase in the consumer price index looks bigger than your salary. It’s time to emigrate – if you can afford the fare.

This might sound strange coming from an ardent secularist who believes in the absolute separation of church and state and who thinks fundamentalist Catholicism has cast a withering, reactionary shadow over Irish life since, and arguably before, independence. The former Eurovision Song Contest winner certainly champions all the causes from which liberals and progressives have recoiled: opposition to divorce; insistence on an outright ban on abortion; promotion of Catholic family values; rolling back of European democratic imperatives over Irish law; the special position of the church in Irish society. None the less, Dana, now Rosemary Scallon, has demonstrated more political courage and stuck closer to her principles than the two major opposition parties.

“There was also home-grown talent from all over the UK so the whole event was a terrific success,” he added. Thousands turned out for the fair despite the loss of the greasy pole – a regular since the 13th century – because of insurance problems. The fun included a fancy dress wheelbarrow race around the pubs, more than 50 horses and their riders marking the boundary of the town, a concert by schoolboy Eurovision singer Tom Morley and a host of attractions including a rodeo ride.
