Supposing the situation does not get better and European Broadcasting Union will charge too much for participation, it is possible that MTV withdraws from taking part in Eurovision Song Contest 2005 in Kiev. However, if it will be likely to cover the costs of the event, a national preselection would be organized to select the potential Hungarian representant. In 1998 Hungary participated for the last time in the Eurovision Song Contest. Hungary has participated 4 times in total in the contest and their best position was the 4th place in 1994 for “Kinek mondjam el v?tkeimet” by Friderika Bayer.

But the blaze of publicity has been causing deep debate and division within the dervish community. jpg” >

Turkey’s famed dervish dancing has never been more publicised

Appearing in tourism promotion films and at Eurovision song contests, their distinctive circular dancing has never been more widely publicised. Some say what has been happening of late is a sign of a new, more broad-based spirituality. But others see it as a commercialised sellout of fundamental principles. The controversy began when a group of dervishes in Istanbul began holding the sema – the traditional whirling dance – with mixed groups of men and women. They also began wearing brightly coloured costumes, or tenures, and announced themselves open to all – regardless of religion.

Tal Sondak was a surprise winner in Israel’s 2001 Kdam-Eurovision, since he was then (and in to some extent even today) totally unknown in the Israeli music scene. Tal went on to represent Israel in Copenhagen with Ein Davar, a journey that ended at the 16th place. Adding this to the fact that his Eurovision entry didn’t top the Israeli charts back then, were all the cause for his return to anonymity. And for some, playing the domestic cabaret market is the height of their achievements. * SIX – The boy-girl sextet created on Ireland’s only Pop Idol series were promised millions from record company bigwig and future American Idol judge Simon Cowell, but he soon lost interest and so did the record-buying public. * MICKEY HARTE – The winner of RTE’s first You’re A Star series finished eleventh in the Eurovision and soon parted company with his record company. * SIMON CASEY – The man who lost out to Mickey Harte released a clutch of under-performing singles and has had a “guest star” appearance in a production of Grease. * CHRIS DORAN – Following his victory in the second series of You’re A Star, the Waterford man went on to perform worse than any previous Irish contestant at Eurovision. He’s now attempting to kick-start his career. * GEORGE MURPHY – He was the people’s favourite on You’re A Star and has had a moderate profile since, including a stint performing with The Dubliners.

Leitrim, save your breathIrish Independent
My first instinct was to leaf through George W Bush’s election manifesto to see if Leitrim was next on his list of places to invade. After all, Leitrim is fullof WMDs – Woeful Musical Decisions. Eurovision winning songwriter Charlie McGettigan, the rock and roll kid, lives there. It’s also a Country and Western heartland. FF Senator Paschal Mooney has his base there as does crooner Larry Cunningham who hit the big time with his recording of Lovely Leitrim. Truly, this county is an Axis ofEasy Listening, something no leader of the free worldcould tolerate. But it turns out the reason this ‘Save Leitrim’ group has been formed is more prosaic.
