Swiss look east for Eurovision success
swissinfo.org – Nov 11, 2004
The controversial decision has sent shock waves through the Swiss music scene where it is being seen as a slap in the face for homegrown talent. Swiss television bosses say the choice of Baltic rising stars Vanilla Ninja is Switzerland?s best hope of success at the televised European music contest. The Estonian rock chicks ? three blondes and a brunette ? have topped the charts in Germany as well as at home. In recent years Switzerland has either failed to qualify for the competition or has ranked in the last six.

In an effort to avoid another embarrassing flop the Swiss have steered clear of home-grown talent by sending Estonian rock-pop outfit Vanilla Ninja to sing on behalf of the alpine nation. Bookmakers have made the four-piece girl band one of the favourites to win the contest which takes place in the Ukrainian capital Kiev. But the path to Eurovision glory has been anything but smooth with Switzerland?s entry beset by problems in the run-up to the event. Irish president is inaugurated
BBC News – Nov 11, 2004
Mrs McAleese 53 from Belfast was returned to the post for a further seven years last month. Her nomination was unopposed after her potential rival Dana Rosemary Scallon failed to get enough support. ‘Unique service’

The Eurovision winner and former MEP failed to get the support of either four councils or the signatures of 20 TDs and senators. Mrs McAleese had nominated herself for another term which under the Republic of Ireland’s constitution a sitting president can do. The former Pro-Vice Chancellor at Queen’s University was first elected in 1997 as the eighth president of Ireland – and the first from Northern Ireland. She had the support of both Fianna Fail and the Progressive Democrats when she first ran for office. In her address President McAleese said Ireland had “struggled with that other ambition for the unity of our island”.

Your view: Did the Beatles write the worst song?
Telegraph.co.uk – Nov 11, 2004
Oscar Huettner New York Positively has to be without question Billy Don’t Be a Hero by Paper Lace. My toes still curl just thinking about it !! Leigh MacQueen Los Angeles USA When I was a lad my parents would treat me to a single now and then. On oneoccasion I wanted The Move’s Blackberry Way but they obviously thought ittoo much that their 9-year old should be listening to a bloke in make-up soinstead they bought me a contender for the Eurovision B-side contest sungby Sandy Shaw and named Monsieur Dupont. Although it remains easily theworst thing I ever have heard I still keep it right next to my extensivecollection of records from the genius that is Roy Wood – all bought with myown money!Stuart BassonChesterfield And where does “Sugar Sugar” by the Archies rate on the worlds worst? Mike Bryant Apparently this was a survey of 1000 people. Since that is the case how did the majority of them manage to choose a Beatles album track as the worst song of all time? Every other song in the top 5 in this survey is a single. Did the respondents have a free choice of song or were they presented with a list of songs to choose from? What was the complete list?Matt McQueen The worst song ever without question has to be the awful awful awfulDeck of Cards by Wink Martindale. Showing my age I know but it was sobad that I can’t forget it.

No renuion for Abba
The Age – Nov 11, 2004
It’s just not there. Abba was one of the most successful 1970s European pop groups. They won the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest with Waterloo andsubsequent hits included Fernando Dancing Queen andThe Winner Takes it All. The group split up in 1981. Four years ago they turned down anoffer of $US1 billion ($A1. 32 billion) to re-form. The two couples who made up pop’s most famous acronym –Agnetha Bjorn Benny and Anni-Frid — have long sincedivorced.
