Teenager prepares for Eurovision

Cory Spedding, 13, from Frizington, jetted out to the town of Lillehammer ahead of the competition, which takes place on Saturday night. She follows in the footsteps of 11-year-old Tom Morley, also from Cumbria, who came third last year. Cory will be performing The Best is Yet to Come, which she wrote herself. About 7,000 people will be watching her perform in Haakons Hall, but Cory says she will not be intimidated by the crowd.

Fox took time off the show at the Birmingham Hippodrome after his father was found dead at his south Wales home. Police were called to the Bargoed home of Richard Mullet, aged 56, on Monday. His death is not being treated as suspicious. A post-mortem examination is being carried out and the coroner has been informed.

The tribute video also features a brief appearance from American singer Cher. A BBC3 spokeswoman said: ?Whilst the puppets perform, a host of familiar faces appear at the window of Rik?s office to watch and listen, with each member of the line up taking a cameo role.

Quick now, music lovers everywhere–here’s your Swiss News trivia question of the month: Which classical passage became the theme anthem for all Eurovision related broadcasts? Time’s up. It’s the ‘Te Deum’ from Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s Triumphal March–a reminder perhaps that the early vision of a Europe-wide showpiece tier television first took flight with images of high culture. But “Old Europe” didn’t react to that musical vision as hoped in the early 1950s, and another idea took hold instead: pop music as sung and danced by contenders from an ever-growing number of member countries. This “vision”, once a mere gimmick, has caught on.
