Abba musical goes ‘home’ to Sweden
Telegraph.co.uk – Jan 1, 2005
It is still running there but has also become the most successful theatrical production in the world. From Korea to Toronto, there are no fewer than 14 touring productions allowing 18,000 people to see it on a stage somewhere every night. The musical – once memorably described as Feydeau-farce-meets-disco-in-Mykonos – has grossed more than $1 billion, making the four members of the group that won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 with the song Waterloo richer now than they ever were before the band split in 1982. The show will open in Stockholm in February and will involve translating all of Abba’s greatest hits – from Money, Money, Money to Dancing Queen and The Winner Takes It All – into Swedish for the first time. Despite the nationality of the four Abba members, Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, their hits were all recorded in English. “It has been quite a challenge for Björn to translate the songs and we have all been apprehensive about taking it back,” said Judy Craymer, the British producer who conceived the musical. She added: “Sweden isn’t the first place you naturally go to when you are rolling out a show but I think that the country is still immensely proud of Björn and Benny.

Gay Byrne returns to TV with school series
Stage – Dec 31, 2004
The show, which begins in February, will feature Dana, the former Eurovision Song Contest winner who later became a member of the European Parliament and contested the Irish presidency. An RTE spokesperson said that Byrne had been brought out of retirement because of his “consumate professionalism and his ability to boost the ratings”. For over half a century Byrne was synonymous with RTE, playing host to the world’s longest running late night chat programme The Late Late Show, while also filling a morning radio slot. In 1999, he officially retired, leaving the Irish state broadcaster with a gap in its star line-up. Though officially off the payroll, he made frequent appearances on television, fronting nostalgia programmes.
