Singer hits wrong note in scandalIndependent Online
Gracia Baur, 22, has defended her producer David Brandes, also behind Swiss entry Vanilla Ninja, and said she would go to the finals in Kiev despite complaints from other German singers. “I haven’t done anything wrong,” said Gracia, whose career began two years ago as a “German Idol” song contest finalist but faded when sales of a subsequent song fizzled. ‘I’m guess I’m jinxed'”I’m guess I’m jinxed,” she told Bild am Sonntag newspaper. “Every time things look like they’re going well for me someone comes along with a frying pan and whacks me on the head… “I’ve been a bad judge of people,” said Gracia, whose skimpy tight-fitting costumes have even burst open on stage. “But I know that David (Brandes) is worthy of my trust. ”

Still, German Eurovision officials at public broadcasting network NDR have banned Brandes from taking part in Kiev and Germany’s pop chart operator has suspended the producer and his acts for three months. But NRD officials, who are responsible for Germany’s entry, said the decision to ban Brandes would not affect Gracia because she won the preliminary when television viewers voted her as the best performer on March 12. “When David was banned from the Kiev contest I briefly thought about quitting too,” Gracia said. “It’s his song that I’m singing. I thought if we win, who’s going to get the trophy? I’ll feel like a little child who’s lost her parents.

Mr D’Arcy is best known for presenting You’re A Star, RTE’s nationwide search for Ireland’s entry to the Eurovision.

Mr Prattey promised that the new venue would be able to attract artists such as U2 or Madonna. The 50-year-old, who joined the NEC in 1983, rose through the ranks from assistant event manager to oversee such projects as the National Indoor Arena and Birmingham’s International Conference Centre. He is credited with helping to attract events such as the G8 Summit and the Eurovision Song Contest to Birmingham as well as enticing dog show Crufts to move out of London in its centenary year. “It’s a wrench to leave Birmingham but I can see some real parallels with Liverpool – we have an opportunity here to repeat that success,” said Mr Prattey.
