The proposal was made on the same day Cyprus withdrew from this year’s Junior Eurovision Song Contest. Mavrikios commented that this year?s withdrawal does not mean that Cyprus will not participate in the forthcoming contests. As for the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest selection, the deadline for submitting songs for the national final expired on 9th December. So far there were no official announcements or press releases, though past rumors indicated that various Greek and Cypriot stars, including Annette Artani and Marina Solonos, submitted songs. A jury will choose a number of songs, that will participate in the 2006 national selection. No date has been set yet. I know that the public owns part of me in a sense and it has a right to that. However anxious they may be to drive home their ordinariness, outside of Radio 1 the pair have been busy filling out their CVs with high-profile presenting work including Glastonbury as well as charitable television capers: Bowman won Celebrity Fame Academy earlier this year, and Murray impersonated Mark Knopfler on Celebrity Stars in their Eyes. The next step is to win back Eurovision glory for the UK, and they say it’s not just a rumour: they’ve written the hit already. They also say that being a celebrity doesn’t necessarily engender good radio. “There are certain shows which have brought in big names, like the breakfast show on Capital. They’ve brought Johnny Vaughan in who’s a massive name and they can’t even get a million listeners. And that’s because the show’s not very good.

“What a remarkable draw! (in fact, a 7-1 co-favourite of eight). ”When Lothar Mattheus conjoined Portugal and Angola, I hoped he’d deploy the phrase ‘fellow lusophones’ (Portuguese speakers), but the erudition had been exhausted by a spiel about Leipzig’s role in German reunification. Tantalisingly, the odd hint of sub-Eurovision cheese we’d been denied flashed by (“Vould you like to join us, Heidi?” cooed co-presenter Rainer. “Ja, I would love to, of course”) but by and large this was anodyne stuff, producing several Groups of Comatose Tedium but none of Death. Still, that poor record against Sweden apart, Rain Man was happy enough when Trinidad & Tobago completed Group B, and back in London the Celtic Sunshine Boys were ecstatic. “Couldn’t have come any better than that,” said Lawro. “Formality I’d say,” said Hansen, anticipating a last-16 trouncing of the Poles.

The Brightest Day, the Darkest Night By Brendan Graham HarperCollins, st£11. 99 Siobhan Cronin Tipperary-born Brendan Graham is probably best known for his Eurovision Song Contest entries. He penned both Rock ‘n’ Roll Kids and The Voice (for Norwegian entry Secret Garden). But it was through his association with Norway that his best known song, the anthemic You Raise Me Up came about. The well-known ballad, currently in the charts thanks to a Westlife rendition, was the result of a request from Secret Garden’s Rolf Lovland to put words to his melody. It has been recorded by more than 100 artists, including Brian Kennedy who sang it at the George Best funeral, and earned a Grammy nomination.

Starting in Galicia, Spain in November, the crews spend seven months racing, taking in Cape Town, Melbourne, Rio de Janeiro and New York before finishing next June in Gothenburg. There will be 10 cameras onboard each boat, linked by satellite to a purpose-built studio and editing facility at race headquarters just outside Portsmouth in the UK. Eurovision, the operational department of the EBU, will be using its global network of satellites and working alongside Sunset+Vine to distribute the programming.

“There was a bit of friendly rivalry between the two shows,” recalls George, “and we met each other on my opening night. Linzi had one of these crazy, high-fashion fringes, and I thought she looked like a funky chick, so I went over and introduced myself, and we just clicked. ” “I’d seen George on stage, and he had this really cheeky charm,” says Linzi, who performed in Kiev this year as one of our Eurovision dancers. “I was thinking, ‘Who is he?’ He came over and introduced himself. We were just friends for two months, though we both fancied each other like mad but didn’t want to admit it. I went to work with the Tony Kenny show in America for a few weeks and sent him a postcard. When I came home we began to go out together.
