Israeli-Arab Eurovision singer urged to step down over Gaza

The duo Mira Awad a Christian Arab and singer Achinoam Nini who is Jewish and also known as Noa were chosen this week to represent Israel in the televised contest. “Israel would not be able to continue with its war crimes without the support of the international community especially the United States and the European Union” the signatories both Jewish and Arab wrote in an open letter to Awad.

By Alfredo Bloy ANDREW LLYD WEBBER may be in charge of bringing home Eurovision glory for the UK but there is another hope too. An Englishman called Phillip Rushton is attempting to become the Eurovision entry for Spain. You only have to be resident for two years to compete under their flag. Phillip is 45-years-old and originally from Derby.

Noa to represent Israel in Eurovision

The decision to have Noa represent Israel came after “A Star is Born” (Israeli version of “American Idol”) star Marina Maximillian Blumin announced last minute that she would not take part in the competition.

Novelties at the Eurovision

Forty-three countries have confirmed their participation in the 2009 contest including Slovakia which will return to the contest after 11 years. After several-month-long speculations the European Broadcasting Union has released a list of countries which will take part in the competition in Moscow. Besides San Marino which withdrew from the contest all other countries that competed at last year’s competition in Belgrade will also perform in Russia. Although Letonia and Georgia had originally announced their withdrawal from the contest they eventually decided to return.

This weekend Damien Flood became the first act to be booted off the programme. Though Lloyd Webber had the chance to “save” one of the two lowest-polled contestants he chose Charlotte Finlay-Tribe over Flood.
