Moiseyev Bids for Moscow Eurovision Contest
The Moscow Times Russia
By Kevin ‘FlynnPublished: January 13 2009Boris Moiseyev the first openly gay singer in Russia said he is bidding to represent his country at the Eurovision song contest that Moscow will host this May — a move likely to be opposed by many because of his homosexuality. Moiseyev once described as a cross between romantic novelist Barbara Cartland and English drag artist Danny La Rue said in a telephone interview Monday that he had applied to represent Russia although he refused to say any more. If chosen Moiseyev a popular performer loved by fans for his bright and supremely cheesy pop will be a fitting choice for the supremely cheesy contest. But the choice would be a controversial one since homophobic attitudes are still widespread in Russia and Mayor Yury Luzhkov has banned any gay parades during the contest despite its huge gay following.
