Ukrainian singer to represent Russia at Eurovision

The 21-year-old singer who won the 2007 edition of Russia’s version of Star Academy was confirmed as the winner by a professional jury for her song “Mama” in Russian and Ukrainian. Prikhodko had tried to represent Ukraine at the May 16 contest in Moscow but was disqualified for violating regulations. She was admitted to the Russian qualification contest only shortly before the final round on Saturday. Relations between Russia and Ukraine have been strained for several years with a new “gas war” at the beginning of the year when Moscow turned off natural gas supplies for two weeks over a payment dispute triggering supply shortfalls to Europe.

Croatia picks reality TV star as Eurovision representative

He and Susnjara will take the stage on May 14th in Moscow. Croatian hit-maker Tonci Huljic an influential figure in Balkan show business composed “Beautiful Tena” with his wife Vjekoslava supplying the lyrics. Huljic has written four of the songs that Croatians have performed at Eurovision including “Marija Magdalena” which Doris Dragovic sang at the 1999 Eurovision. She finished fourth — tying Maja Blagdan (1996 “Sveta Ljubav”) for Croatia’s best result to date at Eurovision. Last year though Kraljevi Ulice & 75 Cents placed 21st — the worst finish ever for Croatia. After that fiasco some thought the country should sit out the contest for a year.

Spain: Soraya to enjoy European promo tour

Amongst other items Soraya announced that she will be touring Europe with the aim of promoting her entry La noche es para mi. The singer has set her eyes on Greece and Turkey as she will be releasing a CD in the Hellenic country and will develop a musical project with Hadise. Soraya also announced on her Facebook page her participation at two important pre-Eurovision events:.

Russians protest ‘insulting’ Georgia Eurovision song

Young Russia a pro-Kremlin youth group organised the rally near the closed Georgian Embassy in Moscow against “We Don’t Wanna Put In” which Georgia has chosen as its entry to Eurovision to be held in Moscow in May. “This song does not just insult Putin it insults the whole Russian people” Maxim Mishchenko leader of Young Russia and a member of the Russian parliament said on the sidelines of the protest. “I think that you shouldn’t take a non-political contest and turn it into a political show to insult your opponents” he added.

That’s what Georgia is doing with its entry in the 2009 Eurovision song contest The New York Times. The former Soviet vassal which ended up on the losing end of a military conflict with Russia last year set out to needle Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin with its popularly chosen submission “We Don’t Wanna Put In” by Stephane and 3G.
