The idea has shocked a few of the 30 oil companies but others admit that they knew of the scheme and that they think it is a great idea. It is hoped that the public bids will allow for greater transparency in what can often be considered a rather dangerous market. “It’s like a Eurovision song contest or a game show for energy companies” an anonymous executive was quoted by.

The festival kicked off overnight with writer Boris Izaguirre and Eurovision singer Soraya Arnelas inaugurating a week-long extravaganza of parades costumes music and dance. Attended by 2 million people in 2008 the festival has spread over the boundaries of Chueca with drag queens and other colourful figures filling the streets of the city centre. Some residents complained that music lasting until the morning hours prevented them from sleeping prompting the city council to announce plans to move the festival elsewhere in 2010. After a meeting with gay representatives on Wednesday however the authorities backtracked saying it was up to the gays to decide where to stage the event that is now being held for the seventh consecutive time. Iraq oil: It’s only a gameshow

The Daily Telegraph has likened the bidding to an oil-based Eurovision song contest. The contestants (the oil companies) will have their sealed bids revealed in a live show. Politics meet Eurovision
The National
By all accounts though the 78-year-old former Soviet premier turned in a performance far above the norm in a voice that was “very polished with a great tone to it” according to one (apparently unbribed) guest. But with so many world leaders prepared to blow credibility out of the water by declaring their preferences and in many cases by recording convenient examples it’s not hard to imagine politics eventually devolving to an even more warped equivalent of the Eurovision song contest in which Nico and Silvio croon at each other from opposite sides as the UN sits in Simon Cowell-like judgement (“I’m sorry Kim Jong I just wasn’t feeling We Shall Hold Bayonets More Firmly tonight”). Should you ever find yourself short of a karaoke number in the company of the political elite here are a few tips for requests. Kim Jong-il: According to official (so highly unreliable) sources the North Korean leader has composed six patriotic operas and staged several musicals. But the Dear Leader previously thought to be an implacable enemy of “uproarious western music” caused international astonishment last year by issuing a personal invitation for Eric Clapton to play in Pyongyang. His son’s a fan it seems.

They spent ages here singing for the children taking part in the raffle and auction and judging the welly decorating competition. “They even donated an item for the auction which they were given when they were on the Eurovision show and it raised £55 for us. “They were happy to be here and had photographs taken with the children and signed autographs for anyone who asked ? it was great to see them back. “Above: Francine (left) and Nicola meet Ellie Hudson and Ellie Cartledge.
