Czechs’ withdrawal from Eurovision blamed on poor television ratings

cz was the Czech Republic’s Eurovision entry in 2009 but low viewership Europskepticism and allegations of unfair voting mean it may be the country’s last. The Czech Republic has found itself out of tune with the Eurovision Song Contest and has decided to withdraw from the competition. The country which made its debut in 2007 came last with no points in this year’s semi-finals. Its previous two attempts also saw it fail to reach the finals. Poor viewing figures and a general lack of  interest were cited by Czech television as reasons for the withdrawal.

This has been delayed in order for two independent audits to confirm the result and cross check. For the first time the exact votes of the international juries and televote have been declared. In 2009 the Eurovision Song Contest voting system was modified for the final to include the votes of an international jury from each country comprising of five musical experts. The jury vote and televote were added together to create the result for each participating country.

Wogan backs Norton at Eurovision

The broadcaster told the Radio Times he thought the contest was "a spectacular show without a flaw in it". Norton took over as commentator after Sir Terry stepped down saying the contest’s voting was too political. This year the UK’s entry Jade Ewen came fifth with a win for Norway’s singer and violinist Alexander Rybak. Improved votingSir Terry announced his intention to retire as Eurovision commentator after the 2008 contest in Belgrade where the UK’s entrant Andy Abrahams finished last.

In an interview with the BBC he also reveals that he know’s Alexander Rybak well and is concerned about how he will be looked after after such a sharp rise to fame. The norwegian band became an international success in 1985 the year of Norway's first victory and lead singer Morten Harket co-hosted the show in 1996. The band are launching a big comeback with a ninth studio album and international tour but confirmed to the BBC that they will not enter the Eurovision Song Contest. Morten Harket who turns 50 in a few weeks spoke about Eurovision Song Contest winner Alexander Rybak in the interview.
